How Reiki Works

The Theory Behind Reiki

All living things are imbued with energy. Neurons, or the nerves in our brains, fire due to the build up and then release of electricity. The energy that permeates the living world has been long speculated to influence health and wellness. Through recorded history, many theological and humanistic movements have created approaches that attempted to channel this energy for health and healing. For example, some individuals do this through the use of prayer, while others through the focused pacing of breath. With many Eastern approaches, the methods used to channel this energy for health and wellness were found in practices like Qigong, Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi, Meditation, Feng Shui, and Reiki.

The Practice of Reiki

Reiki is a traditional Japanese technique and approach that helps the body process and use energy in a way that helps promote healing, growth, well-being, as well as increased awareness, insight, wisdom, and relaxation. The importance of relaxation and stress reduction is being increasingly emphasized for its importance in Western medicine for the role it plays in contributing to overall health and wellness. Trained Reiki practitioners recognize this important component and help individuals increase their relaxation and stress-reduction through the attunement with healing energy.

The entire Usui Ryoho Reiki process is built around the principles of increasing relaxation and restoration as a component to increasing health, wellness, and balance. Usui Ryoho Reiki views balance as a combination between physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Practitioners of the Usui Ryoho Reiki tradition have been trained and attuned energetically by a Reiki Master in a lineage that stretches directly back to the originator of this Japanese healing practice, Dr. Mikao Usui.

The Typical Reiki Session

Reiki sessions are non-invasive. A typical session lasts either a half hour or an hour; however, sessions can be of varying lengths depending on need and availability. Sessions are usually accompanied by the playing of relaxing music and optional oil-diffuser or incense scents to help increase relaxation and comfort.

The client is welcomed to rest comfortably on a massage table. Unlike massage, Reiki does not require skin contact. As such, the client remains fully clothed and is encouraged to wear comfortable clothing for sessions. Since Reiki is conducted by energy flowing through the hands, physical contact is not required. Often Reiki practitioners will hover their hands over parts of the client’s body, or will place their hands on clients in specific areas (e.g., such as on the sides of the head or shoulders) if the client is comfortable with that contact.

The experience clients have during Reiki vary greatly. During the Reiki session, it is not uncommon for clients to report some of the following: feelings of heat or cold, stomach rumblings, slight involuntary movements (e.g., twitching), seeing colors or lights when their eyes are closed, and having am emotional response.

Immediately following a Reiki session, clients may experience some increased relaxation and potential mild ‘healing effects’ over the next 24-48 hours. These healing effects are related to the body adjusting to the flow of energy and would be similar to the effects many people experience after having a mild healthy detox.

Frequency of Reiki

Clients are encouraged to both consult with their Reiki practitioner as well as trust their own intuition about how often would be helpful for them to have Reiki services. It is not uncommon for some individuals to attend weekly Reiki services, especially when addressing a specific goal or sustaining wellness, while others may attend biweekly, monthly, or every six weeks. For some individuals, other services may also be beneficial in collaboration to Reiki, such as acupuncture or yoga. For all clients, it is recommended that, even while obtaining Reiki services, they maintain regular medical and health (including mental health) services with their appropriate medical doctors and healthcare providers. In this manner, Reiki can be seen as a complimentary health service rather than a replacement for other providers.
